The Artistic Daily Journey of Istinye University Students

Students from the Department of Visual Communication Design at Istinye University’s Faculty of Communication embarked on a comprehensive art trip that expanded their horizons in visual culture and art history under the academic guidance of their professors. Led by Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş, Prof. Dr. Hatice Öz Pektaş, Asst. Prof. Dr. Duygu Sezgin, and Res. Asst. Duygu Yücel, the event offered students the opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice and engage directly with diverse artistic disciplines.

In the Footsteps of Light and Human Stories: The Steve McCurry Exhibition

The first stop of this cultural journey was the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, known for its impressive historical architecture. Here, students visited “The Haunted Eye”, a thought-provoking exhibition by world-renowned photographer Steve McCurry.

Featuring his iconic “Afghan Girl” portrait among other striking photographs that capture human stories and emotions from around the world, the exhibition allowed young designers to experience firsthand the expressive power of photography — through light, color, and composition. This powerful visual archive became an inspiring starting point, enriching their storytelling and visual expression skills.

The Pulse of Contemporary Art: The 18th Istanbul Biennial

Continuing their journey into the realm of contemporary art, the students explored the 18th Istanbul Biennial, engaging with artworks by a diverse range of international artists. Through various installations and conceptual approaches, they observed the current dynamics of contemporary art and reflected critically on the global issues it addresses.

A Legacy of History and Aesthetics: Zihni Han and the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture

The day’s rich program concluded with visits to Zihni Han and the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture, both significant centers of artistic heritage. At Zihni Han, students encountered innovative works featured in the Biennial, while at the Museum, they observed masterpieces that have shaped the course of Turkish art history. These visits enhanced their ability to analyze artworks, evaluate artistic production processes, and shape their own creative visions through inspiration drawn from the past.
