The Art of Ex Libris Comes to Life in the Heart of Istanbul

One of the most refined branches of art, ex libris, came together with art lovers between August 20–24, 2025, at the 2nd International Ex Libris Congress in Istanbul. Hosted by Istinye University, this special gathering brought together artists, academics, and collectors from around the world.

A Meeting Point of Culture and Art

The congress was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş, Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Chair of the Visual Communication Design Department at Istinye University, as well as Chair of the Organizing Committee. Reflecting on the event, Prof. Pektaş noted:

“We are one of the seven universities in Istanbul where ex libris courses are offered. And we are honored to host our Xth International Ex Libris Congress.”

Participants experienced not only academic sessions but also a vibrant art atmosphere, including exhibition openings, award ceremonies, ex libris exchanges, and a Bosphorus tour. The exhibitions at Istinye University’s Vadi H Campus blended Istanbul’s cultural diversity with the delicate art of ex libris, creating an unforgettable experience.

International Participation, Rich Content

The congress showcased over 1,500 works by nearly 500 artists from 34 different countries. This diversity created a unique environment for sharing between artists and collectors. The Rector of Istinye University emphasized the significance of art in his speech:

“As we study the art of ex libris, we see that it is not merely a visiting card but a living art form that reflects social, cultural, and existential perspectives. As a university, we uphold our vision not only as a center of science and research, but also as an institution that protects and sustains art and artists. Here, with participants from different countries, we are delighted to share and keep art and culture alive. To echo the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, if we are to raise free-thinking, enlightened, and conscientious generations, we must emphasize the importance of art more than ever.”

Acknowledgments and Contributions

The Rector also expressed gratitude to the partners who supported the congress and its initiatives:

“A society deprived of art loses one of its vital arteries. We continue our efforts to support art and artists. In this process, we extend our sincere thanks to Bozlu Holding, Mr. Adem, President of our Group’s Centennial, and Selçuk Ecza Deposu for their valuable contributions to the Ex Libris Museum. We are grateful to all the artists, academics, guests, and stakeholders who made this possible.”

Contributing to Istanbul’s Cultural Heritage

The 2nd International Ex Libris Congress made a significant contribution to Istanbul’s cultural heritage while once again highlighting the universal language of art. Throughout the congress, participants had the opportunity to rediscover art not only through the works on display but also through the experiences and exchanges they shared.
